On The Wrist: G-SHOCK GWM5610-1

History

Released in 1983, the G-SHOCK DW-5000C astonished the world with its robust design and unprecedented shock-resistant technology. As the inaugural G-SHOCK model, the DW-5000C set the standard for durability and functionality, laying the foundation for a legendary series renowned for its resilience in the face of the toughest conditions. Nearly 41 years later that legacy is now being carried on by another model, the G-SHOCK GWM5610-1. Commonly referred to as the Square, the GWM5610-1 is part of the 5600 series and closely related to the original DW-5000C. At a glance you would think you’re looking at the exact same watch, and you wouldn’t be entirely wrong. The overall design of the piece hasn’t changed much in the past few decades.

Design

The dimensions of the case are 46.7mm in length, 43.2mm in width, and 12.7mm in height. While these may seem like large measurements, rest assured that the iconic square shape of the case helps the watch fit on smaller wrists. The timepiece fits comfortably on my 6.75 inch (17.1cm) wrist, with absolutely no overhang from the top or bottom of the case. The watch features a sleek black resin case and band, a combined weight of only 51.7 grams, presenting a versatile and understated aesthetic suitable for most occasions. The easy-to-read digital display is housed within the robust exterior, complemented by a straightforward layout that ensures effortless navigation through its various functions. This model’s compact yet robust build, combined with its comfortable wearability, makes it an ideal everyday companion, exuding a balance of toughness and refined design that defines the G-SHOCK legacy.

Functionality

The functionality of the GWM5610-1, or any G-SHOCK for that matter, is undeniable. Besides the standard timekeeping ability, this watch offers a multitude of features that can be used in your day to day life. This timepiece offers 5 World-Time presets with a choice of over 31 time zones, putting any high-end GMT to shame. Included in this piece are the standard functions such as a stopwatch that measures to 1/100 of a second, a timer with a countdown range of 24 hours, and a total of 5 daily alarms. One of my favorite functions with this watch is the automatic LED light. When this function is activated, the watch employs a built-in light sensor to detect ambient light levels. If the levels are low enough, the LED will illuminate once you move your wrist. This is particularly useful for those that require hands-free operations.

The two additional functions that separate this piece from previous models are Tough Solar and MULTI-BAND 6. Tough Solar is G-SHOCK’s latest version of technology in their solar powered watches. This solar function takes both natural and artificial light and keeps the watch powered for up to 10 months on a single charge. The amount of time on a single charge increases to 22 months when utilizing the Power Save function. Although the rechargeable battery will eventually need to be changed, the time between each replacement is exponentially greater due to the Tough Solar technology. MULTI-BAND 6 allows the watch to receive radio signals from 6 different atomic timekeeping transmitters located around the world. These transmitters calibrate the watch to produce the most accurate time available. These transmitters are located in the United States, Germany, England, China, and two in Japan. When the watch is within range of a transmitter it will automatically update. However, you also have the ability to manually receive the signal if need be. This technology is just another reason why G-SHOCK is considered one of the most dependable brands.

Durability

While the watch boasts useful functions, impressive solar-power technology, and exceptionally precise atomic timekeeping, it is the unparalleled durability that truly captivates. The robustness of this timepiece eclipses its other noteworthy features, making it an excellent choice for those who prioritize resilience in their wrist-wear. The GWM5610-1 was built to withstand the harshest conditions and undergo rigorous testing in categories such as; drops from various heights, water resistance, pressure, electricity, and even hammers. This piece has accompanied me on all of my workouts the past few days and I rest east knowing that it’s virtually indestructible. Although official testing is conducted in the Casio laboratories, some of the more entertaining tests can be found on YouTube where people go to extreme lengths to destroy these watches. From a shock-resistant construction capable of enduring powerful impacts to its robust water resistance of up to 200 meters, the GWM5610-1 is engineered to concur all types of challenges.

Likes

One of the main things I like about this piece is the timeless and iconic design. It is reminiscent to that of the original DW-5000C, appealing to those who appreciate the classic G-SHOCK aesthetic. I also like the addition of the solar-powered technology, Tough Solar, which allows for fewer battery changes and charges both indoors and outdoors. MULTI-BAND 6 is something I didn’t know I needed, but I am grateful to have it. With its atomic timekeeping capabilities I rest easy knowing that I have the most accurate time available. Lastly, and it goes without saying, I love the durability of this piece and know that it can tackle any obstacle I put in front of it. The durability is especially important for those that might be going to sketchy places and doing sketchy things.

Dislikes

Although this may be one of the most practical and well-respected pieces I own, there are still some things I dislike. The main thing I dislike is the effort it takes to press down on the buttons. I understand the need for the case to stick out and protect the buttons, but at the same time it can be extremely annoying trying to press down on them. I see this being quite the issue for those that are wearing gloves in the field. This wouldn’t be a problem for someone that didn’t use the multiple functions on the watch, unfortunately I use them daily. In the mean time this will be something that I’ll have to get used to and maybe in the future G-SHOCK can use the better buttons from the more high-end models. The only other thing I dislike is the inconsistency of the MULTI-BAND 6. I leave my watch in the same place every night and sometimes I’ll wake up with a successful update and sometimes I will not. On some rare occasions I’ve also found it difficult to manually receive an update. I understand there are a host of factors that determine a good link but even when I put myself in some of the best conditions, it will sometimes fail.

Final Thoughts

Over the past few days I have found it difficult to take this watch off. I find myself midway through the day wishing I had worn it to work and excited to get home and throw it on. With the attractive price, abundant availability, and rugged durability, this is easily my favorite watch for under $100. While there are some things I would like to see changed, this piece is absolutely incredible and I have loved having it on the wrist. Whether you are searching for a near clone of the original DW-5000C or simply seeking a practical and durable watch, the G-SHOCK GWM5610-1 will never disappoint.
